This talk will define "resistance" to antimicrobial drugs in relation to decreased treatment effects on efficacy on patient-centered outcomes. This talk will also explore the relationship between resistance defined in the test tube and patient factors such as age, co-morbidities and baseline severity of illness. Understanding the definition of resistance and patient factors leads to selection of appropriate research questions that should be asked when evaluating interventions in the treatment of infectious diseases, and the selection of study designs and design features of clinical trials including enrollment criteria and outcome measures/endpoints. Selection of appropriate research questions also reflects understanding of appropriate risk-benefit analysis in the setting of evaluating treatments for improved effectiveness in serious and life threatening diseases.
