Abstract:

Electronic health records (EHRs) have enhanced recent approaches to the design and analysis of observational studies of innovations in health service delivery. For example, EHRs provide a platform for rapid-cycle reporting on health care and outcomes so providers can learn what components of an innovation are working and what aren't. However, these rich databases are not an end in themselves; rather, researchers must constantly evaluate what methods are appropriate for each setting. In this roundtable, we'll discuss current advances in EHR systems and the suitability of extant statistical methods to answer important questions in reforming health service delivery. We'll discuss an example from Better Health Greater Cleveland, an independent alliance of health care providers, consumers, government leaders, academics, and payers dedicated to improving the health of Northeast Ohio residents living with chronic disease. Better Health's original sponsor was the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's now-concluded Aligning Forces for Quality project.
