Abstract:

Each March, millions of individuals participate in "bracket" contests and other games inspired by the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. In a particular contest introduced by Archer, Cleary, Lock, and Trono (2001), each entrant selects a set of teams subject to a cost constraint with the goal of maximizing total wins; the cost of each team is determined by its seed. Using model- and simulation-based methods, we evaluate a collection of common and uncommon strategies for constructing entries to this contest and compare the results to historical outcomes.
