Title: Detecting Sea Water Migration in Fish of the Canadian Arctic
Author(s): Martin Lysy*
Companies: University of Waterloo
Keywords: Change-point detection ; Mercury contamination ; Migration event
Abstract:

Recent studies have revealed increasingly elevated rates of mercury exposure in populations indigenous to the Canadian Arctic. This is due to high contamination of freshwater fish, which constitute a primary component of the traditional northern diet. In contrast, sea-run fish have much lower mercury content than their freshwater counterparts. Thus, our objective is to study the migratory patterns of various northern fish species between fresh water and sea water in order to identify those which are safest to consume. To do this, we analyze fish ear bones which record the chemical composition of the sample throughout its lifetime. We present a change-point detection analysis for migration events which accounts for measurement error, seasonal trends, and individual-level effects.
