Title: Integrating Statistics Across Disciplines: A Secondary School Case Study
Author(s): Kyle Barriger*
Companies: Castilleja School
Keywords: secondary school ; integrated statistics ; capstone project

Traditionally, statistics has been taught solely within mathematics at the secondary level and often restricted to a single course. This presentation will address the traditional and non-traditional ways that statistics is being taught in grades 9-12. Traditional approaches include integration into the math sequence, similar to common core proposals, leading to a major capstone project for students who complete AP Statistics. Non-traditional approaches presented include interdisciplinary 9th and 10th grade projects that are anchored in data, student experiments in 10th grade history, and increasing integration in history and science in 11th and 12th grade. Consistent with the recommendations found in the Common Core, GAISE, and the recently released Undergraduate Curriculum Guidelines, there is an emphasis on formulating appropriate questions, analyzing real and complex data and its sources, using statistical analysis software, and communicating findings to a broad audience. The goal of Castilleja's program is to ensure that all graduates are conversant with statistical concepts and data by graduation regardless of whether or not they take a statistics course at Castilleja.
