Abstract:
|
In this paper we first develop a generalization of the log-series distribution based on the generalized negative binomial distribution of Gupta and Ong (2004). After presenting its derivation, we investigate some of its characteristics and its relationship with other existing versions of the log-series distribution. Then, we utilize this distribution to formulate the well-known model with decreasing failure rate which represents the distribution of the minimum of a random number of independent exponential random variables where the number of exponential observations has the proposed log-series distribution. Such a model represents the life of a series system with random number of components and has applications in the areas of "Engineering" in the context of work hardening and in biological sciences in the context of 'immunity'. We investigate some properties of this model and develop methods of estimation and test of hypothesis. Finally, we present some examples drawn from the literature.
