Digital medicine technology promises to revolutionize medicine by providing individuals and their health care provider unprecedented access to health-related data outside the typical clinical setting through smart phone-enabled monitoring devices. Hypertension and blood pressure monitoring has been a focus of such technology as high blood pressure is a manageable, yet poorly controlled, condition that is a leading cause of mortality in the United States. We conducted a 6-month, randomized controlled trial which examined health, health self-management, and health care costs in 139 individuals with hypertension. The intervention consisted of providing individuals with an iPhone and iPhone-enabled Withings blood pressure monitor with an appropriate app, an online portal, and device training. Individuals were instructed to use the device up to twice per day, three times per week. Importantly, we were able to collect each of the approximately 10,000 recordings and the time they were taken. Participants also completed baseline and end of study surveys and provided biometric readings, and we obtained health insurance claims information on all participants before and during enrollment.
