Title: Central Composite Designs Built from Strength 2 Orthogonal Arrays

Abstract:

Standard central composite designs (CCD) for six or more factors have excessive runs sizes, due to the run inefficiency of resolution V 2^(k-p) fractions. For instance, the usual seven-factor CCD requires at least 78 runs (plus centerpoint replicates). Some authors have proposed replacing the factorial portion with lower resolution factorial portions. We explore this literature and show how computing the generalized word length pattern enables one to quickly identify the orthogonal arrays that maximize D-efficiency and A-efficiency. From among these efficient designs we choose orthogonal arrays that make the standard errors for estimated linear main effects and interactions as similar as possible.
