Keywords: clinical trials ; blinding ; social media ; data monitoring committee
Abstract:

Blinding has been a central principal of clinical trials for decades. In most blinded trials, the participants, outcome assessors, and sponsor do not know the treatment assignment. However, social media such as Facebook may put the blinding in jeopardy. Some patients blog and post their clinical trial experiences. This may have an influence on other patients in the same trial, or other patients' willingness to join a trial. Is the trial sponsor or data-monitoring committee responsible for monitoring these activities? What, if anything, can be done to mitigate the negative impact on blinding?
