Abstract:

National Basketball Association (NBA) players are judged on many factors, including points per game, rebounds, assists, steals, and many more. Our goal in this paper is to decide based on these factors and others, which NBA player(NBA players who played between 1979 and 2014) really is/was the best. We use different weighting schemes and different distance metrics, and compares results of different sets of weights applied to the NBA players data set. The techniques that are applied to determine weights for TOPSIS criteria include constrained regression, weights determined by experts, entropy weights and equal weights. The weights developed using this technique could help clarify what criteria NBA recruiters should look at in finding the next big NBA star. After obtaining ranks for each weighting technique we compare the results of the TOPSIS ranking to existing ranking methods.
