Title: Detecting Changes in the Quality and Ecology of a Freshwater Lake

Abstract:

The Upper Four Mile Creek watershed in southwestern Ohio and southeastern Indiana is comprised primarily of agricultural land. The watershed drains into Acton Lake, a freshwater reservoir in Hueston Woods State Park, that typically exhibits poor water quality and high phytoplankton biomass. Changes in farming practices since the early 1990s have influenced the water quality and ecosystem. Here, we explore an assortment of time series techniques modeling the changes in water quality and the population of phytoplankton. Technical difficulties are addressed and some new methods are discussed for modeling changes in biological systems.
