Medical knowledge is increasing at an exponential rate, reshaping the health care environment with dramatic diagnostic and therapeutic innovations. Whereas these innovations offer unprecedented opportunities to improve health and reduce suffering, they also disrupt traditional care processes and put stresses on the health care delivery system (HDS). These challenges require innovations in the way we measure the value of health care delivery and use this information to improve its effectiveness and efficiency. To meet these challenges, we need to create HDS characterized by continuous learning and improvement. The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS), which combines the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and seven hospital campuses throughout the New York metropolitan area, recruited a team of quantitative scientists for development of a research institute to aid in building such HDS. I'll discuss this development with special emphasis on the administrative structure, stakeholder engagement, team development, choice of projects, training/mentoring, and financing. I'll highlight the advantages of a biostatistician being the director and share my learning process.
