Author(s): Harry James Norton* and George Divine
Companies: Carolinas Medical Center and Henry Ford Hospital
Keywords: Teaching ; Statistical Education ; Paradoxes
Abstract:

Keeping undergraduate biology students and medical residents interested in statistics, when most are taking the class as a requirement can be hallenging. We attempt to accomplish this goal by using real-life and engaging examples. Our examples include 3 related statistical paradoxes. Paradoxes, by their very nature, are interesting and non-intuitive. The topics of the paradoxes include IQ scores, Corporate Average Fuel Economy(CAFE) standards for automobiles and trucks, and cancer staging. See if you can find the common thread in the 3 paradoxes!
