Title: Using the SATS (Survey of Attitudes Toward Statistics) to Predict Student Grades
Author(s): Anne Michele Millar* and Marjorie E. Bond
Companies: Mount Saint Vincent University and Monmouth College
Keywords: student attitudes ; statistical education ; student grades
Abstract:

The Survey of Attitudes toward Statistics (SATS) collects information not only on specific attitude components (Affect, Cognitive Competence, Value, Difficulty, Interest and Effort) but also on the students' background, both academic and personal. Past research has focused on the association between attitude component scores and grades; higher scores on attitude components tend to be associated with higher grades. We also investigate the relationship between the SATS background items and grades. This opens up a variety of questions: Can students predict their own grades? Do students who spend more time studying gain higher grades? Do the more senior students gain higher grades? We address these questions (and more!) in our study.
