Title: Evaluating Model Independent Stochastic De-Clustering Using Synthetic Earthquake Catalogs
Author(s): Kevin Nichols*
Companies: California State University at Fullerton
Keywords: Stochastic De-clustering ; Statistical Seismology ; Synthetic Earthquake Catalogs
Abstract:

Earthquakes cause aftershocks. However, until Model Independent Stochastic Declustering (MISD) was developed (Marsan and Lengline, 2008), there was no reliable way to identify which earthquakes caused a given aftershock. Recently, improvement to MISD were made (Nichols and Schoenberg, 2013) to allow for a spatially varied background rate. Using highly detailed synthetic earthquake catalogs, correct classification rates for both methods are computed and compared.
