Abstract:
|
This talk explores motivation for and specific examples of bringing topics centered on social justice into an introductory statistics course. I will begin by discussing why I think it is important to discuss social justice in statistics courses, and introductory courses in particular. I will then explain why it makes sense from a statistical standpoint to discuss social justice. I will provide several specific examples of how I have incorporated social justice conversations in my introductory statistics course, including student reactions and reflections. The intent of this talk is to share how I am beginning to implement social justice topics in my statistics courses, as well as to initiate a wider conversation among other statistics instructors interested in sharing resources and ideas of ways they are talking social justice in their statistics courses.
