As statistical consultants, how many of us think of communication as a tool for facilitating decision-making? Every time we communicate with our clients, they will make a decision based on the content of our communication. For instance, if we tell our clients "your data are messy and can't be analyzed", they might decide to find themselves a different consultant. However, if we tell them "the data are messy so we should discuss strategies for overcoming this", they should be able to provide insights into what caused the data messiness. Poor or no communication between consultants and clients means that poor or no decisions will be made. In this paper, we will discuss strategies for managing and improving the flow of communication between consultants and clients so that both parties can achieve a common ground and a shared vision for project success. These strategies include adopting a decision-driven mindset, building strong relationships with clients, managing client expectations and using creative thinking to anticipate and resolve challenges. An improved communication flow will translate into more thoughtful decision making and better project outcomes overall.
