Abstract:

Transportation experiments are often impractical or impossible due to inherent safety concerns, unavailability of factor combinations, and expense. Microsimulation or agent based modeling provides a powerful surrogate. Computer simulations are safe, relatively inexpensive, and allow for a great number of factor combinations. They however are based upon modeled reality, rather than reality. We discuss issues in the often used mantra of no models are exact but some are useful. We discuss designing and evaluating a microsimulation model of a Nebraska corridor. A wide variety of space filling designs are used that give disparate results. The results will be compared and discussed.
