Abstract:

It is well known that under the constant treatment effect assumption, the population average treatment effect (ATE) is the same as the instrumental variable estimator, or the local average treatment effect (LATE). Relaxing this assumption in various degrees, we present some inference procedures for estimating ATE from from the average outcomes for compliers, always-takers and never-takers. We also extend the framework to studying the adherence behavior in comparative effectiveness trials with two active treatment arms (e.g., medication versus psychotherapy) while patients have preferences towards one option.
