Abstract:

Statistical jobs in industry have always demanded different skills in statisticians than academia. Typically we look for applied-oriented problem solvers, as opposed to theoretical geniuses (although those are great, too!). But are statistics departments adequately preparing students for this kind of position? And in today's world of big data, with a huge demand for quantitative skills in the marketplace, are statistics departments providing the needed training to their students to compete for these jobs? I'll provide my perspective from the telecommunications industry and weigh in on how academic departments can better suit this need.
