Abstract:

In this talk, I will discuss the successes (and failures) of a new course at Harvard entitled "Learning from Big Data." The course, which takes a data-first approach to teaching statistical methods, integrates a tournament forecasting competition as one of its 4 data-focused modules. Through the talk, I will highlight lessons learned, mistakes made, and attempt to provide insights for others interested in implementing a similar course.
