Abstract:

This presentation showcases student survey responses collected during the evaluation of Pono Choices: A Culturally Responsive Teen Pregnancy and STI Prevention Program. In 2012 and 2013, responses were collected over 2 semesters from 850 students in 46 class periods in 17 middle schools on 5 islands in the state of Hawai'i. These students were in the treatment group of a cluster RCT study of the middle school health curriculum. Ninety-six percent of treatment group students that enrolled in the study during the school year the survey was fielded responded. A multi-level model was developed and SAS PROC GLIMMIX used so that the nesting of students in schools and class periods was taken into consideration during analysis. Students responded positively in the areas of self-identify/efficacy, expectations for the future, and teen pregnancy and STI prevention strategies, with few gender, race, and age differences. Intra-class correlations were low (0.02 and lower); therefore, multi-level model results were similar to descriptive and inferential results of analysis conducted that did not take subject nesting into account.
