Abstract

Methodologies to filter observations at discrete time instances go back to Kolmogorov's work in the early 1940s; the emergence of statistical tools for spatially referenced observations dates back to Krige and Matheron in the 1960s. Since then, the analysis of spatial/space-time data has enjoyed significant development, in addition to the increasingly prominent role of Big Data and location-specific information. We review how spatiotemporal statistics is positioned in present by illustrating applications that justify its importance as a research field with a truly global impact and contribution across the physical and engineering sciences. We also exhibit salient features in recent spatiotemporal analysis research that revolve around integrating general knowledge beyond observations and accounting for nontrivial uncertainty in data. Join us in this roundtable event with your own experience, examples, and approaches. Our goal is to bring experts together for an informal discussion to sketch the future global potential of space-time statistics, in light of the current data-gathering trends, ever-advancing analytical technologies, and dynamically shifting research directions.
