Title: Implementing GAISE in the Cape Cod Community College Elementary Statistics Path
Author(s): Mary Moynihan*+
Companies: Cape Cod Community College
Keywords: statistics education ; gaise ; community college
Abstract:

ASA and AMATYC have endorsed the recommendations of the GAISE report. Full implementation of these guidelines has resulted in a significant metamorphosis of the curriculum for both the introductory Statistics course itself and subsequently for the developmental mathematics course that serves as a prerequisite. In November 2013, AMATYC and NADE co-sponsored the first National Summit on Developmental Mathematics. A central theme in this national discussion is the question of what mathematical skills and competencies are required for the introductory Statistics course. A GAISE-inspired statistics course focusing on conceptual understanding rather than a mere knowledge of procedures requires very different mathematical preparation than the traditional introductory course. We will discuss curriculum redesign for a statistics path at Cape Cod Community College including syllabi, student learning outcomes, sample activities, revised assessment questions, and evaluation of the first year of implementation.
