Abstract:
|
Nursing research involves the measurement of functional (i.e. blood pressure), psychosocial (i.e., depression), and biological (i.e., cytokines) constructs. Despite widespread use, the integrative measurement and analysis of multiple constructs in a given study is in its infancy. Researchers often use an array of measures to characterize a single construct such as "prenatal stress" without any clear construct theory to inform both the assessment and analytic process. The purpose of this discussion is to delineate theoretical and analytical considerations for decreasing the disconnect between construct theory and measurement in nursing research.
