The Gap Between Applied Research and Nursing Statistics Education

Over the past decade, researchers in psychology and education have conducted studies on teaching and learning introductory statistics at college level in order to train educated statistics users in research and practical applications. Properly apply statistics knowledge into research project is a challenging task for nurses and other health related researchers. In this paper, I will share my experience in teaching statistics and research methodology courses at graduate level in nursing. The focus will be on what are characteristics of a well trained researcher and how statistics education can be used to fulfill such goal. Both cognitive and non-cognitive factors from students, faculty's point of view, curriculum and teaching methods will be addressed. Bloom's taxonomy of human intellectual behavior classification will be used to examine how theoretical framework can be applied to improve nursing student's statistics reasoning and applications. In conclusion, recommendations will be presented for further curriculum change and pedagogical improvement.
