Abstract:
|
From a public health perspective, the benefits of physical activity (PA) are well understood. Regular PA helps control weight, is associated with a reduction in cardiovascular disease, diabetes, metabolic syndrome and some cancers, and helps strengthen bones and muscles. Different sets of guidelines for children, adult and the elderly have been established, in terms of both duration and intensity of PA. For adults 18-64 years of age, the CDC recommends a minimum of 150 minutes per week of moderate to intense PA. To realize health benefits, PA must occur in bouts of at least 10 minutes. With funding from NIH we collected PA data in Iowa. Almost 1,400 adults 21-70 years enrolled in the study, and about 1,200 provided usable information. In this presentation, we discuss estimation of the probability that individuals comply with CDC guidelines for PA and explore personal attributes associated with probability of compliance.
