Abstract:

Engaging students in an elementary statistics class is a challenge familiar to many instructors. The fundamental causes of the lack of student engagement range from lack of preparation to lack of motivation. One common method of encouraging student engagement is by rewarding them. However, this appears to be a "Patchwork solution" to a serious issue. Research shows that students should be engaged for long term learning. In spring 2013, two sections of an elementary biostatistics class of approximately 60 students participated in a study. Each student filled out 4 surveys: the Survey of Attitudes towards Statistics: Pre and Post; a survey of student engagement, and finally a survey of learning styles. The objective of the survey analysis is to study the correlation between students' learning styles, attitudes towards statistics, and the student engagement. The understanding of various learning styles can help an instructor to plan activities and modify the teaching style to improve classroom engagement and attitude towards learning for a wide variety of students. The authors will present the results and the conclusions of the survey analysis.
