Title: Introducing Hypothesis Testing with a Reflection Exercise and Student-Selected Synonyms
Author(s): Frank Matejcik*+ and Ahmed Al-Asfour
Companies: South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and Oglala Lakota College
Keywords: Hypothesis Test ; reflection ; synonym
Abstract:

Hypothesis testing is related to the experience of observing something strange. Students are asked to recall the observation of something strange. The instructor attempts to describe this strange observation as unusual by using statistical terms. The instructor then introduces the terms in hypothesis testing, while relating them to characteristics of the students' observations and having students select synonyms. The selected synonyms are included in parenthesis following terms in lectures for the rest of the class.
