Title: Adjustment to the Proportion of Suicides to Incorporate Suicide Attempts
Author(s): David Lawrence*+
Companies: Department of Veteran Affairs
Keywords: suicide attempt
Abstract:

The relationship of suicide attempts to completed suicides is complex. For males in the United States completed suicides are predominantly with highly lethal firearms, somewhat limiting suicide attempts. The number of completed suicides by United States females is about one quarter of the number for men. This differential in the number of completed suicides between the genders leads to consideration of the role of suicide attempts in the process of completed suicides. Suicide attempts are considered a risk factor for completed suicides. Building a simple statistical model to investigate the relationship between suicide attempts and completed suicides provides insights about reducing the suicide rate. Survival methodology is used in deriving the model. This leads to the estimated proportion of suicides being slightly reduced by suicide attempts. Accordingly, under this model suicide attempts would be considered a protective factor for suicide.
