Title: Student Projects in the Age of IRBs
Author(s): Samuel Wilcock*+
Companies: Messiah College
Keywords: Statistical Education ; Student Projects ; IRB ; Teaching through Application
Abstract:

Student projects used to be fun, creative, and easy to execute. This was generally true, as long as students were guided in the type of questions they could ask. As the focus on ethics and the desire to protect subjects has grown, the landscape has changed. Now even simple projects are technically required to obtain approval from the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of the college or university. There are various ways to deal with the new realities. In this paper Dr. Wilcock will lay out several approaches that educators could take, and advocate for embracing the requirements as an integral part of the learning process. Dr. Wilcock will use the requirements at his own institution as a case study to illustrate how easy it can be to help our students learn about the process while they also learn to apply their statistical knowledge.
