Abstract:

For the past five semesters, I have been using the Island for projects in my Introduction to Statistics course. The Island is a simulated population of over 8,000 "people" living on an island. There are many tasks that the Island "residents" can complete, such as run up a hill or record blood pressure, or questions that the respondents can respond to, such as "Do you eat meat?" The simulated population allows students to conduct experiments and surveys on these residents. The island allows students to experience some of the difficulties of data collection and explore a topic that they might be interested in studying but might not be able to do with living human subjects, especially in a limited time frame. I have used the Island for five semesters as the final project in my completely online course and for one semester in a course for students with learning disabilities. In this talk, I will share the assignment structures that I have used, share examples of what students have done and share student feedback. I will suggest pitfalls to avoid and suggestions for success.
