Abstract:

The effect of depression on the risk of Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) is controversial in the literature. We conducted a meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies to assess whether depression increases the risk of CHD. Relevant studies published through February 2, 2014 were identified through searching MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, ISI Web of Science, as well as manual searches of reference lists. Only cohort studies that examined the association of depression and risk of CHD were included. Data were abstracted independently by two investigators using a standardized protocol; disagreements were resolved by consensus. Cochran Q statistics were used to assess heterogeneity among included studies. To estimate the overall risk, each study was weighted by the reciprocal of its variance. Data were pooled by use of a random-effects model due to heterogeneity. 22 studies met inclusion criteria. Overall, depression was associated with a significantly increased risk of CHD (RR, 1.41; 95% CI [1.25, 1.59]; p< 0.001). The estimate was consistent in sensitivity analyses. This meta-analysis demonstrates that depression is associated with an increased risk of CHD.
