Abstract:

We examine the use of a sequential F-test method to allow inferences on equality of pairs of means in an analysis of variance (ANOVA) setting. We use the F-test repeatedly on smaller subsets with Type 1 error proportional to the size of each subset assessed. Simulation demonstrates this method has strong Type 1 error control for the closed family of all subset homogeneity hypotheses. The method may be viewed as a shortcut version of the full closed testing method. The simplicity of the method makes it readily implementable in ANOVA settings, where the alternative would be to apply range statistics or other simpler, but less powerful, methods.
