Abstract #311338
Title: Visualizing Spatial Analysis of Tropical Cyclones and Seasonal Cyclone Forecast
Author(s): Marcela Alfaro-Córdoba*+ and Joe Guinness and Montserrat Fuentes

Keywords: Visualization ; Tropical Cyclones ; Spatial-Temporal ; Forecast
Abstract:

We develop animated and interactive visualization methods for facilitating the presentation of tropical cyclone tracks and the results from a proposed spatial-temporal tropical cyclone forecasting model. We analyze and present best tropical cyclone 6 hour tracks for 400 cyclones over 30 years. We forecast the probability of occurrence of a tropical cyclone at any spatial location in the Atlantic Basin as a function of sea surface temperature and latent heat flux. The goal is to introduce a powerful and interactive visualization tool and statistical framework that facilitates the exploration of the association among important covariates and forecasted probabilities across space and time.
