Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) refers to the convergence of networking and information technology with engineered physical systems to create a new generation of systems that integrate distributed networks of sensors, controls, and processors. These systems, also referred to as "industrial internet", "internet-of-things", "machine-to-machine", and "system-of-systems", are on the cusp of unleashing an extraordinary cycle of innovation through smart systems in areas such as manufacturing, transportation, utility infrastructures, and buildings, including home appliances and remote sensors. The SmartAmerica Challenge is bringing together organizations with CPS technology, programs and test beds and interconnects them via an industrial internet to demonstrate the potential to improve safety, sustainability, efficiency, mobility, and overall quality of life. The purpose is to elevate awareness of the exciting opportunities possible through CPS and demonstrate what can be done today. This lecture will also discuss technical issues in CPS and Internet of Things, such as real-time data exchange, deterministic communication, scalability, and collaborations among different industry segments.
