Abstract:
|
The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(NHANES) samples are highly stratified, multistage probability samples. The sampling plan for the NHANES surveys involves the selection of primary sampling units(PSUs, counties or groups of contiguous counties), segments(groups of dwelling units) within PSUs, dwelling units within segments and sample persons within dwelling units. At this last stage, selected subgroups are oversampled. Therefore, the need for accounting for these features(stratification, clustering, and unequal selection probabilities), i.e. applying design based methods has been stressed. However,in some instances, estimates including means, percents and regression coefficients as well as their standard errors may be based on a small number of sample persons or a small number of first stage units or PSUs. In such instances, model based approaches which incorporate these features of the NHANES sample design are needed. In this poster session examples where model based approaches are needed in analyzing data from the NHANES surveys will be presented.
