Abstract:

The emergence of the Common Core State Standards Initiative presents challenges and opportunities for redesigning the role of statistics in undergraduate business programs. Although the base Common Core standards for mathematics education are common to all participant states and territories, additional standards are implemented unevenly. However, even in areas where optional standards are not implemented fully, business schools now have a tremendous opportunity to rethink not only their introductory statistics courses but related ones, including those on computer literacy and research methods. This paper suggests changes to these courses based on the implementation of the statistical elements in the Common Core.
