Title: Competitor or Compliment: Social Media Analysis and Social Science Research
Author(s): Martin Barron*+
Companies: NORC at the University of Chicago
Keywords: social media ; research methodology ; social science
Abstract:

Social media analysis has emerged as an exciting and vibrant new area of research. Combining traditional research methods and statistics with natural language processing, machine learning, and "big data" processing, analysts have mined social media for insights into a host of social media processes ranging influenza rates to inflation rates; from voter preference to the sexual preference. But despite the vibrancy of this research and breadth of topics it is being applied to, it remains unclear what the true utility of this methodology is or how, ultimately, it will be integrated into the social science research toolbox. In this talk I discuss some of the promise and perils of using social media for research and discuss how social media can be used alongside traditional methodologies. I also discuss the idea of research "fitness for purpose" how it can be applied to social media analysis.
