Title: Weight Smoothing in Sample Surveys
Author(s): Malay Ghosh*+
Companies: University of Florida
Keywords: Horvitz-Thompson ; Spline Smoothing ; Weight Modelling
Abstract:

Horvitz-Thompson estimator has been used for more than five decades as the standard estimator of the finite population total or the mean. It is perceived to be very useful, especially for unequal probability sampling because of its design unbiasedness. However, situations do arise when these estimators perform very poorly. This demands adjustment of survey weights as necessary. The two popular methods to address weight adjustment are weight smoothing and weight trimming. In this talk, I will discuss some weight smoothing methods, both frequentist and Bayesian.
