Abstract:

These are quite exciting times for our profession and our community. The data tsunami has fundamentally changed our field. As the key discipline involved in transforming data into information, we are centrally positioned in today's information age. The International Year of Statistics has showcased and celebrated our many accomplishments and contributions around the world. Of course, the new opportunities come with many challenges. I will outline some of these, in the context of research, practice, and education. I will also describe the needs in statistical capacity in developing regions of the world, activities being planned by the International Statistical Institute, and opportunities for JSM participants to become involved.
