Title: University Distance Education: Strategies That Work

Abstract:

On this occasion of ASA's 175th anniversary the current status of distance education programs in statistics will be reviewed. The focus will be on graduate certificate and masters programs and the role of Southern Regional Council on Statistics educators in their development, past and present. Topics will include program and course offerings; faculty qualifications and involvement; studio design; mathematics and computer background required for program admission and delivered in the program itself; strategies for lecture delivery (synchronous vs. asynchronous, webstreaming vs. downloading, etc.); methods for keeping students involved and on track; strategies for teaching statistical software; use of applets and activities in distance learning; methods for conducting online interactive recitations; assignment and testing strategies; preserving academic integrity in a distance education format; masters theses and projects; and comprehensive exams.
