Title: Preparing Students for Big Data Using R and Rstudio
Author(s): Randall Pruim*+
Companies: Calvin College
Keywords: big data ; data science ; programming ; R ; RStudio ; education
Abstract:

There are many definitions of big data, but one thing all have in common is an essential reliance on computational tools to work with the data. Part of preparing students for big data is introducing them early to scalable computational tools and the conceptual frameworks necessary to use them. One such tool is the statistical programming language R.

We have been using R in a variety of first courses in statistics for more than a decade. In this session we will share some tips for teaching R to beginners in the context of statistics courses emphasizing elements that are precursors to handling bigger data.
