Title: Using Information from Disparate Sources to Improve Survey Estimates
Author(s): Linda J. Young*+

Keywords: big data ; combining data
Abstract:

The June Area Survey (JAS) is conducted by the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) in June of each year. Among its uses, the JAS provides good direct estimates of large crop commodities, which is of interest to policy makers and the markets. In addition to the data collected through the in-person JAS interviews, supplementary information is available from various sources. For example, farmers often provide information on the land to be planted to various crops to the Farm Service Agency (FSA) as part of the requirements for farm subsidies. NASS uses remote sensing technology to produce CropScape, a GIS data layer providing information on the crops throughout the growing season. Each of these sources has errors, though the types of error vary. This presentation focuses on efforts to combine information from these disparate sources in a principled way and to obtain valid important survey estimates and measures of their uncertainty.
