Abstract:

We present our work on building automated statistical natural language processing systems for tracking both infectious disease outbreaks and side effects of medical products using online media. HealthMap.org, a freely available Web site, brings together disparate data sources, including online news aggregators, eyewitness reports, and validated official reports, to achieve a unified and comprehensive view of the current global state of infectious diseases and their effect on human and animal health. At the same time, the MedWatcher program taps publicly available social media discussions of drugs, medical devices, and vaccines as well as engaging the public in direct reporting, to provide an improved view of adverse events and other side effects. We present methods and results from both of these projects, for statistical modeling of public health threats.
