Abstract:

Professor Dayanand Naik was not only my colleague but a good friend for nearly thirty years. As a professor and statistician, he was an exemplary academic, having possessed deep knowledge of multivariate statistical methods. He co-authored two books with Professor Ravindra Khattree on the subjects of Applied Multivariate Statistics and Multivariate Data Reduction and Discrimination using SAS software. Both books have become indispensable tools for teachers and practitioners of multivariate methods. While anyone can easily recognize Dr. Naik's contributions to the field of statistics, most people who knew him also were able to recognize his greater contribution to our community - his compassion. Dayanand was one of the kindest people I have ever met. He was always eager to help anyone out, and would often volunteer in the community. The academic community may have lost a great statistician, but our entire community has lost a person of great magnanimity. In this talk, I will discuss a few of Dr. Naik's contributions and advances in multivariate analysis as well as share a few of my favorite memories of Dr. Naik.
