Abstract:

The evolution of technology in statistics education has not been limited to simulations, animated displays, and ready statistics calculation. Technology has significantly changed and (usually) enhanced the ways in which instructors and students interact. The introductory statistics course has evolved from a rote presentation of methods, in which we were proud to have evolved from mechanical calculators to electronic ones, into a modern course that emphasizes understanding the world, reaches over the internet for data, and relies on graphics and animations. Over the past several decades technology has increasingly facilitated more and more flexible communication, including the use of email, course management systems, blogs, tweets, and in-class interaction. But as we move into an era of MOOCs and distance education, the trend may be turning in a different direction. We'll consider the pedagogical benefits and challenges of technology in statistics education and try to peer through the haze to plan for the future.
