Abstract:
|
Better symptom management, in cancer as well as in other diseases, has been hampered by the lack of a strong clinical-trial evidence base for guiding symptom management practice. Randomized clinical trials of symptom interventions differ from clinical trials of cancer treatment therapies. For example, multiple symptom interventions may be needed to address distinct aspects of patient well-being because cancer and cancer-related symptoms are multidimensional. In addition, efficacy of symptom intervention trials is evaluated using patient-reported outcome instruments instead of tumor response or survival as in traditional cancer treatment trials. In this session, I will present various approaches in the design and analysis of randomized symptom intervention trials in cancer patients.
