Title: Why an Innovative Core and Academe-Industry-Government Partnerships Are Critical to the Success of the Pharmaceutical Industry
Author(s): Christy Chuang-Stein*+
Companies: Pfizer
Keywords: Innovative core ; Pharmaceutical industry
Abstract:

Innovation fuels the pharmaceutical industry. In recent years, our understandings of the molecular mechanisms that underlie the pathology and progression of diseases have greatly increased. New technologies and scientific discoveries are changing our strategies for diseases management. These have led to significant progress in developing targeted therapies and helping us move toward the era of personalized medicine. To claim our rightful place in this revolution, statisticians need to help accelerate the transformation of information to knowledge, knowledge to decisions, and decisions to actions. This requires partnerships among academe, industry and government so that great minds collaborate to move theory to practice that could influence the therapeutic landscape. Such partnerships will open up new frontiers for statistical applications and statistical engineering. This will also earn statisticians the reputation as invaluable partners in the pursuit of value-added medicines in the 21st century. I submit that the collaboration should take place in all innovative industries, not just the pharmaceutical industry.
