Abstract:

Mediation models can enrich understanding and interpretation of patient-reported outcome measures. We describe the fundamental elements of single mediator models and relevant advanced topics. The total effect of a predictor variable on an outcome variable is partitioned into an indirect effect via a mediator variable, as well as a direct effect attributed to everything else. The formulation of and results from a mediation model are based on the research objective. Concepts are explained and quantified through illustrative examples.
